Armstrong LED ceiling lamps: DIY installation and repair

Armstrong luminaires are renowned for their wide range of applications, ease of installation and luminous flux parameters. LEDs have pushed the leading player in the market - fluorescent lamps - and continue to strengthen their position. Thanks to the development of technology, the installation of such lighting devices will not be a problem, and the design features allow you to make repairs yourself.

What are Armstrong lamps

Amstrong luminaire lamps are made of transparent polymers that do not obstruct the luminous flux

The Armstrong luminaire carries cutting-edge technology in its small body. Powerful CREE LEDs are mounted on a thick aluminum plate to improve cooling and extend the life of the panel. The lighting elements are attached to the lamp body with rivets.

The body of the luminaire is made of sheet steel, 40 mm thick, welded to increase strength and durability. It has mounting holes for fixing the lamp and laying the power cable. Powder painted white. The diffuser plate is made of polycarbonate and is attached to the body by means of guides and a snap-on plug.

The diffuser owes its optical properties to high-quality material and special structure. For the production of Armstrong lamps, a transparent polymer is used, which provides minimal obstacles to the luminous flux. The prismatic structure provides an even luminous flux, without glare and glare, making it a good choice for both office and residential applications.

Benefits of lamps

Increased energy saving parameters make the described luminaires a good alternative to traditional light sources. Due to the use of LEDs instead of fluorescent lamps, the luminaire does not contain mercury. The service life is 50 thousand hours.

When using Armstrong devices, the lighting in the room becomes more comfortable for the eyes. The reason for this is the high light output, 3000 lumens, and neutral color flux.

Ease of installation and a wide range of applications make it possible to install luminaires on any surface. It is worth noting the ease of installation on suspended ceilings.

LED luminaire mounting options

Suspended LED Panel Mounting

Armstrong LED lighting fixtures are appreciated for their ease of installation and wide range of applications. Installation, for the most part, does not present any particular difficulties and can be done by hand.

Installation tools

A distinctive feature of this type of lighting fixture is that no specific tools and skills are required for its installation.

If you need to make a built-in installation, you will need a jigsaw and special spacers. For surface mounting, it is advisable to use liquid nails, but you can get by with thick double-sided tape.

The wires are used PVA or PVVSh. It is necessary to install an additional junction box for each group of lighting fixtures.

Suspended mounting

To install Armstrong lamps, a standard ceiling with a 600X600 mm module is suitable.First, you must select the location of the future location of the electric lamp and remove the panel from there, in the place of which the lighting device will be installed. Next, you need to bring the supply wires to the installation site.

Luminaire installation procedure:

  1. Remove the diffuser panel.
  2. Connect the wires inside the LED lamp housing using the terminal block.
  3. Replace the diffuser panel.
  4. Place the lamp on the ceiling rails.

This completes the installation. The light fixture is ready to use.

When the Armstrong LED lamp is connected to the network, it is imperative to connect a ground wire to it, regardless of the method and place of installation.

Surface mounting

Surface mounting

If necessary, the lamp can be placed on the ceiling surface. This requires:

  1. Remove the light diffuser.
  2. Drill holes in the ceiling in accordance with the fixing elements on the luminaire body.
  3. Fix Armstrong lamps to the ceiling with dowels.
  4. Connect the supply wires to the terminal block of the electric light.
  5. Install the diffuser.

All manipulations must be carried out only with a de-energized network.

Flush mounting

Embedded connection

If you need to add a point light source, you can install a recessed luminaire. This requires:

  • Cut a hole in the panel to match the size of the lamp body.
  • Lead the supply wires to the installation site.
  • Install special spacers on the luminaire.
  • Connect the lighting fixture to the mains using the terminal block.

Installation of a recessed luminaire requires more skill, as it is necessary to properly cut the hole in the decorative panel.

Installation without cover frame

Installation can be done without using additional accessories included in the kit. An electric lamp Sibertek SL 6060 is suitable for this. The only obstacle on the way will be the choice of a place to install the supply driver. But since it is absolutely not necessary to put it next to the lamp, it can be hidden in a junction box or behind drywall, having previously lengthened the supply wires.

Ceiling mounting can be done with double-sided tape or liquid nails. The second method is preferable, since the probability of falling of the lighting fixture is minimized.

The procedure for mounting a luminaire using liquid nails:

  1. Degrease or prime both surfaces.
  2. Apply liquid nails to the surface of the lamp housing with a "snake".
  3. Press the lamp firmly to the ceiling and hold for 1-2 minutes.
  4. Connect the supply wires.

Under no circumstances should it be manipulated with the electrical network without first disconnecting it.

Network connection rules

The standard connection diagram is used - 4 × 18.

The wires under the ceiling must be passed through the corrugated cable channel, avoiding sagging. Connecting luminaires in series is not allowed. It is better to use separate junction boxes for each group of luminaires, from which lead the supply wires to each luminaire individually.

Wire connection: zero (blue) to N connector, phase (red or white) to L.

It is best to use PVA wires or ball screws as a conductor. The core must be crimped with a sleeve or tinned to improve contact.

Armstrong lamp repair

Lamp driver Amstrong

The repair is complicated by the fact that the lamp in the Armstrong LED lamp cannot burn out. We need to look deeper for the reason. With the necessary knowledge, the repair will not be difficult.

The reason for the failure of the lighting device may be a malfunction of the power supply or LED in one of the tapes.

If the driver fails, the first thing to look for is the fuse, varistor and filter capacitor at the input.

Determining if a fuse is faulty is very easy by visual inspection. If the thread in the glass flask is broken, replacement is required.

When the varistor breaks down, a crack and burnout are formed on its body. The capacitor swells or bursts and fills the board with electrolyte. Both of these faults can be easily eliminated by replacing burnt components and cleaning the board from carbon deposits or electrolyte traces.

If the LED fails, it is necessary to identify the tape on which it burned out. You can determine the faulty diode by visual inspection. A small black dot appears on it. After finding the culprit, the tape is soldered off, carefully removed from the aluminum substrate and replaced with a similar one.

If visual inspection does not give results, then another unit is faulty. In this case, you will not be able to reanimate the lighting device yourself. The rest of the repair of the Armstrong LED lamp can be done by hand.

Safety engineering

When working with the mains, it is necessary to make sure that there is no voltage, turn off the input circuit breaker and hang a poster “Do not turn on! People work! " For greater safety, you can disconnect the input wires from the breaker.

When using ladders, construction goats and stepladders, you need a person on a safety net. Compliance with these rules will allow you to safely mount the lamp.
