Description of ondulin - properties, advantages and disadvantages

Ondulin is called Euroslate. It is an inexpensive roofing covering that looks like a simple asbestos-cement or chrysotile-cement slate. It differs from the classic material in its lightness and variety of colors. In addition to corrugated sheets, ondulin-tiles are produced, the surface of which resembles individual plates of natural material. It is easy to lay bituminous panels on your own if you study the technology.

Definition of ondulin

Gable roof with ondulin coating

It is a pressed sheet that resembles corrugated slate or metal roofing tiles. The material is convenient to use for simple roofs and structures with complex shapes. The composition contains cellulose or glass fibers impregnated with bitumen mastic, polymer modifiers are added to the mass to improve the qualities.

Ondulin is produced in two main types:

  • in the form of a standard corrugated slate;
  • in the form of a flexible covering with a convex tile pattern.

The fiberglass base is represented by individual threads, which are felted into a solid mass for strength and elasticity. Basically, natural bitumen is used, ozonized with oxygen. Sometimes polymer-based modified bitumen is used to increase flexibility and frost resistance.

The upper backfill is made with shale and basalt fine fractions. The second type is used more often, since rounded granules adhere better to the surface compared to scaly particles. Slate absorbs oils from the mastic and therefore changes the color of the material.

History of appearance and production process

In 1944, OFIC SA launched the production of a new roof covering called Ondulain. The team still manages the main production facilities in Italy, France, Normandy, Belgium, Turkey, Spain, Malaysia, Poland. In Russia, the output is represented by the Nizhny Novgorod factory, which works with all regions and regions of the country.

Manufacturing processes:

  • the cellulose is heated to high temperatures (from + 120 ° C), modifiers are added;
  • pressed, the result is a wavy corrugated surface or piece profile of tile plates;
  • impregnate finished products with bitumen mastic complete with polymers;
  • the top is covered with minerals, heat-resistant resins;
  • cut plates to size.

A multilayer material is obtained with the same properties at any point of the panel. The top of the profile is sprinkled with crumbs to protect against ultraviolet radiation, melt with infrared rays, and extend the service life of ondulin. Spreading protects the surface from blows by branches, hail.

Characteristics and scope

Layered structure of ondulin

The classic version is used for flat roofs and vaults, the sheets have 10 waves, the dimensions of ondulin are 2.0 x 0.95 m. The products weigh 6.5 kg, with a wall thickness of 3 mm.

Other types of ondulin:

  • Smart is an improved variation that differs from the standard panel in weight and dimensions. The points of screwing of hardware are indicated on the sheet, the edge is decorated in the form of a lock. There are 10 waves, dimensions 1.95 x 0.95 m, weight 6.3 kg, thickness 3 mm.
  • DiY does not differ from the classics in properties, but it is produced in reduced dimensions for ease of installation.The dimensions of the ondulin sheet are 2.0 x 0.75 m, the sheet weighs 5.2 kg, the wall thickness is 3 mm. The panel contains 8 waves.
  • The compact is produced for small squares. The eight-wave plate measures 1.0 x 0.75 m, the profile weighs 2.5 kg, and the material thickness is 2.5 mm.

Euroslate is used to cover gazebos, awnings, awnings, verandas. They are successfully used on the roof of a summer kitchen, barn, garage, work hangar. Residential buildings are also covered with ondulin or corrugated board, usually the material is placed in the form of tiles.

Ondulin is not only colored, it is produced transparent. This option serves as a good cover for greenhouses, greenhouses, and other summer cottages.

Advantages and disadvantages of onduline coating

Ondulin can be matched in color to the decoration of the house

The material is moisture resistant, does not absorb or retain water, as it is impregnated with oil and bitumen. The material looks good. There are red brown, blue, green colors, other colors.

Useful qualities of an ondulin roof:

  • hygiene and environmental friendliness, the material does not emit harmful components when heated by the sun;
  • light weight reduces the load on the foundation (the advantage is almost 4 times compared to asbestos-cement slate);
  • euro slate is easy to handle and install;
  • flexibility allows installation on rounded surfaces;
  • the coating has a low cost compared to metal profiles, corrugated board;
  • a layer on the roof dampens sound, protects against noise.

Lack of flammability of the material, which ignites already at a temperature of + 250 ° C. The strength of the euro-slate is small, therefore, the elements of the sheathing are carefully calculated so that the flooring does not bend when heated by the sun.

Ondulin's choice

Ondulin beaver tail

Take into account the size of the ondulin, the height of the wave. It is more convenient to lay sheets of small dimensions, therefore they are used in private houses, and large ones are installed in industrial facilities. Branded brands release material that fully meets the declared parameters, and the discrepancy in size indicates a fake.

Sheets of soft ondulin tiles are of the following types:

  • dragon tooth;
  • under a brick;
  • beaver tail;
  • shingles;
  • rectangle;
  • hexagon;
  • rhombus.

Manufacturers assign names to different series in order to unify the type of profile, to make the category more unique.

The thickness of the walls of the sheet should be the same in all areas, folds, bulges. Mastic stains and bitumen smudges should not appear on the surface. The color of high quality ondulin is uniform without bright and dull spots. The suitability of the material is confirmed by a quality certificate, a guarantee for the services of the manufacturer and supplier.

Thin corrugated panels are produced with a thickness of only 3 mm, so they are easy to cut if there is a shortage in a row and finish laying. On a standard slab 2.0 m long, 0.95 m wide, there are 10 projections-waves, the height of which is 0.36 cm. The wavelength is 20 cm, the width is 9.5 mm.

When purchasing, you can complete the material with special elements for covering valleys, skates, tongs. On sale there are cornice and gable gutters, snow holders, roof fans, window elements.

Material compatibility with different types of roofing

Laying ondulin on the roof without insulation

For all types of roofs, you need to calculate the number of sheets, taking into account not the dirty dimensions of the panel, but its place in the square of the roof, which it overlaps, taking into account the overlap in length and width.

Calculation instructions for installation on a roof with a slope greater than 15 °:

  • despite the accepted area of a standard sheet (1.92 m2), it takes up less square by 0.3 m2 from each strip;
  • the overlap during installation is made 100 - 150 mm in length, and 96 mm in width (one wave);
  • the final net dimensions will be 1.85 - 1.9 m in length, 0.864 m in width;
  • the usable area of the panel will be reduced to 1.6 - 1.64 m².

The useful square of the sheet varies with the slope of the roof.If the roof is flat (up to 5 - 10 °), then the lateral overlap is done in 2 waves, and the length is shifted by 300 mm, the useful area is 1.25 m². An inclination of 10 - 15 ° reduces the lateral overlap to one wave, and the end of the next panel is brought to the previous one by 200 mm. The useful area is increased to 1.5 m².

Shed roof

Shed roof from ondulin

In this version, there is no ridge, and the slope of the slope is determined by the difference in the height of the opposite walls. In the project, the plane is positioned so that the prevailing wind direction in the area does not fall on it. The rafters are placed on load-bearing girders, resting on a monolithic belt of concrete or Mauerlat. The slope of the slope is chosen taking into account the wind and snow pressure.

The choice of lathing intervals 50 x 50 mm for the installation of ondulin:

  • tilt in the range of 10 - 15 ° - lathing step 45 cm;
  • more than 15 ° - 60 cm.

The slope of a pitched roof is often small, so ondulin is installed with insulation in order to protect a small attic space from freezing. Make a double crate if mineral wool is used. A counter grill is needed to create a ventilated gap in order to prevent condensation and insulation from getting wet.

The sheets are mounted from the bottom row, the second is made with the panel offset to the floor of the row. The absence of a ridge complicates the ventilation, therefore, air vents are organized under the lower and higher cornice for supplying and exhausting air.

Sloping roof

Sloping roof with onduline coating

Difficult places are drawn up after laying the main onduline coating. Overhead elements decorate the roof and perform protective functions.

Technological features of installation:

  • the ridge is installed on the roof slope, guided by the inner sections of the waves; for installation, an additional rail is provided along the length of the ridge;
  • at the installation site of the valleys, additional linings are provided along the length of the depression 25 cm wide;
  • from the bottom of the valley, panels are placed starting from the lower area, the overhang is left 50 cm wide, and the following parts of the valleys are laid with an overlap;
  • on each wave of the sheet, gable parts are nailed when decorating the stiffeners.

Roof windows are fixed with nails with wide heads at the junction of the sheets. A roof fan is mounted on each wave that connects to the sheets. The gaps between the profile and the ridge are filled with a special compound.

Hipped roof

Hip roof from ondulin

The structure consists of four similar triangular slopes called hips. This roof does not have a ridge girder, and the sheets must be cut to size during installation, so a soft Euro slate will ease the problem. When installing the rafter legs, they achieve complete identity of the hips, symmetry of the triangles.

Before laying ondulin, the roof is insulated with mineral wool, foam, extruded polystyrene foam with a waterproofing membrane. Near the ridges of the hip roof, they put a continuous crate of boards, OSB slabs.

Ondulin is mounted at the bottom of the leeward side of the roof. The first sheet is placed 20 mm above the cut line, and the markings are carried out along the ledge of the diagonal rafter leg. After trimming, the euro slate is equal to the stretched cord, nailed. The next tier is laid so that the joint falls in the middle of the previous sheet. The pads on the ribs of the hip roof are placed after the installation of the main coating is completed.

Comparison of ondulin with other coatings

If you make the crate correctly, the strength characteristics of ondulin are improved.

Classic slate is reliable, not afraid of an aggressive atmosphere. There is a health hazard in material with asbestos fibers. Euro slate is safe in this regard, since there are no harmful components in the composition. The cellulose filaments, bitumen and resins of which the material is composed extend its service life. Classic slate does not burn in case of fire, you can move along it when extinguishing. Ondulin ignites and loses strength.

In comparison with the metal roofing of the euro, the slate does not allow the sounds of raindrops and birds to pass through, therefore such a roof is "quiet".If a crate is made under the ondulin with the correct pitch, then it withstands any blows of small particles, branches.

The metal coating and onduline sheets equally do not let water through from rain, and leaks occur only at the joints. After heating in the sun, Euroslate reliably seals such areas and protects the seams from moisture penetration.
